Abstract

This paper describes a new initiative to provide information services in support of professionals, including legislators, that work in health, pharmacovigilance, the herbal and pharmaceutical industries or that undertake pharmaceutical research. The services are being designed to help these audiences to use plant names appropriately and navigate safely the rich information sources that already exist for medicinal plants. Input from the user community is sought to ensure that the services built meet practical needs and are sustainable.

Abstract

Vascular Plants of Alberta is a user-friendly, portable key to the ferns, fern allies, gymnosperms, and monocots of Alberta. This key to the species of Alberta will delight all those interested in botany, with its intuitive and exhaustive presentation of the plants, including new names and taxonomical understandings that have emerged in recent years. Designed to be carried into the field for handy reference and use, Vascular Plants of Alberta presents: -A list of all species, native and introduced, known to occur in Alberta, arranged alphabetically -Information on scientific names of taxa and their synonyms -Keys for identifying taxa, including infra specific -Descriptions of the major taxonomic categories -Discussion about taxonomic problems and relationships of the taxa -Distribution and habitat information for native species -Descriptions for new taxa

Abstract

The chili pepper is a spice and medicinal remedy used since ancient times by the American peoples who were the first to undertake the domestication of 5 species belonging to the genus Capsicum (Solanaceae): Capsicum (Solanaceae): Capsicum annuum, C. baccatum, C. chinense, C. frutescens e C. pubescens. After the sixteenth century the chili pepper became similarly popular in other continents and today the five species number many reference pod-types and over 3,000 varieties. The book describes their uses in the different spheres of cuisine (aromatic, spicy and colourful), medicine (antioxidant and digestive for internal use, rubefacient and anti-rheumatic for external use) and ornamentation (cut branches, floral compositions, border plants, splashes of colour).

Abstract

n Arabidopsis Protocols internationally recognized experts offer a comprehensive collection of significant new methods for gene mapping, cloning, and reverse genetics, as well as updated standard protocols for work in Arabidopsis genetics and molecular biology. These time-tested methods range from techniques for the successful growing of Arabidopsis to strategies for gene cloning. The sections on genetics, transformation, and gene expression analysis will be especially helpful to scientists involved in mutant analysis or in producing and analyzing transgenic plants. In many cases, the protocols can also be applied to other plant species, with minor adjustments. Serving both experienced researchers and beginners in the field, Arabidopsis Protocols will immediately become the standard reference for laboratories working with Arabidopsis, the plant of choice to approach many fundamental questions in plant biology.

Abstract
